This is an
article and photo of one of our instructors who just left for Afghanistan.
SFC Michael May of Van Zandt Co. was recently activated to active duty from his
reserve status. Mike is a karate instructor at the local YMCA and has been
active at the Williams Contemporary Fighting Arts Karate program at the YMCA for
the last two years. Sensei May is a first degree Black Belt and was scheduled
for promotion to second Dan in the up coming September Test.
Sergeant May was
stationed with 807th Medical Command in Seagoville Texas. He worked
as a civilian on the base when not on Reserve duty. Sergeant May did his first
tour of duty in Vietnam with the Marine Corp. He enlisted in the Army Reserves
after his discharge for the Marines. During Desert Storm he was activated and
sent to Germany with a Medical Unit as it prepared for potential causalities.
Sergeant Mays MOS is food service, and he was in charge of the Hospitals food
service in Germany.
Sergeant May has spent
the last few weeks at Fort Polk. La. as he prepares for deployment in
Afghanistan. He has been assigned to the 820th Signal Company where
he will be in charge of the Food service. When asked why they would activate a
50 year old for over seas duty he said “its because they need us old timers with
experience to manage the program”.
Sergeant May’s wife Ruth
will manage things at their home in Van Zandt Co. until he comes home. Mike and
Ruth also have a 21yr old son Travis May who is stationed in Hawaii with the
United States Air Force.
